Former U.S. President Donald Trump said he would not take sides in Brazil's presidential election but described the contest as a "disgrace," according to remarks reported by Al Jazeera.
Trump's comments come as Brazil faces a polarized runoff between incumbent Jair Bolsonaro and former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The former U.S. president has previously expressed support for Bolsonaro, who is often compared to Trump for his populist style.
Despite refusing to explicitly endorse a candidate, Trump's characterization of the election as a disgrace signals his critical view of the Brazilian political process. The remarks add an international dimension to a race that has drawn global attention due to concerns over democratic institutions and election integrity in Latin America's largest democracy.
