A critic of President Donald Trump mocked Fox News during a rally in Rock Hill, South Carolina, telling a reporter he attended to see a "cult" up close.
Viral Exchange at Rally
The exchange occurred Thursday as Trump campaigned for Darline Graham, the sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, who is running for a full Senate term against Democrat Annie Andrews. Fox News reporter Lucas Tomlinson asked a man identified as Tom why he was at the rally. Tom replied he was too young for the Jonestown Massacre in 1978 but wanted to see a cult firsthand. Tomlinson appeared stunned and moved to another interview, and the clip quickly went viral.
Senate Race Dynamics
Trump's visit was his second to South Carolina this month as Republicans seek to defend a Senate seat that has not elected a Democrat in nearly three decades. Graham, appointed in July after her brother's death, faces a tighter race than expected. Republican Rep. Nancy Mace described the campaign as a "train wreck" with volatile polling. Meanwhile, Andrews, a pediatrician and mother, urges voters to try something new. Trump canceled a planned Kansas rally Saturday, opting for virtual events.
