Burger King US Sales Jump 8.4% as Turnaround Gains Momentum

Burger King's U.S. sales surged 8.4 percent in the third quarter of 2026, extending a turnaround that has revived the chain's fortunes. The brand, which operates more than 19,700 locations in over 120 countries, posted the results Thursday as part of parent company Restaurant Brands International's earnings.

Menu Overhauls Drive Growth

The increase follows an 8.5 percent rise in the second quarter, helping Burger King reclaim its position as the second-largest burger chain in the United States in August after six years behind rival Wendy's. Restaurant Brands International CEO Josh Kobza said the burger chain performed better than expected, crediting efforts to listen to guest feedback and act on it.

Chef Amy Alarcon Leads Culinary Revamp

In December 2025, Burger King hired Amy Alarcon as head chef for its U.S. and Canada stores. Alarcon, who previously led culinary innovation at Popeyes and product development at Arby's, oversaw an overhauled Whopper featuring an upgraded bun, pickles, mayo, and crush-resistant packaging. In August, the chain introduced new chicken nuggets made with 100 percent white meat and a revamped sauce lineup.

Industry Faces Affordability Challenges

The gains come amid a broader affordability crisis. A September survey by restaurant consultancy Popmenu found 67 percent of Americans are spending less at restaurants this year compared to last. McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski warned that high inflation will keep industry traffic growth largely flat for years to come.
