Putin dwarfed by Mozambique's tallest leader at GECF summit

Russian President Vladimir Putin appeared noticeably shorter than Mozambique's President Daniel Chapo during a meeting at the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) summit in Moscow on Tuesday. Chapo, who stands 6 feet 8 inches tall, is believed to be the world's tallest political leader, while Putin is approximately 5 feet 7 inches.

Height difference draws attention

Photographs of the handshake at the Grand Kremlin Palace quickly circulated online. Chapo's office released images showing him towering over Putin, while Russian state photographers later distributed a lower-angle version that made the Russian leader appear taller. Social media users mocked the contrast, depicting Chapo as the wizard Gandalf and Putin as a hobbit.

Putin's height sensitivity

Reports over the years have suggested Putin takes measures to conceal his stature, including hidden shoe lifts, controlled camera angles, and assigning shorter bodyguards. Former KGB classmate Yuri Shvets described Putin as "literally tormented" by his height, saying the insecurity shaped his career and leadership style. Shvets recalled the 2015 Minsk negotiations where Putin looked "like a schoolboy among adults" next to taller Western leaders such as Angela Merkel and François Hollande.

Action-man persona

Throughout his presidency, Putin has cultivated an image of physical vigor through staged photo-ops — shirtless horseback riding in Siberia, judo sessions, and a 2018 plunge into an icy lake for Orthodox Epiphany. Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson linked this projected machismo to Putin's decision to invade Ukraine, calling him a "perfect example of toxic masculinity" and suggesting a female leader would not have launched such a war.
