Voters in the 2026 midterm elections will decide on more than 140 statewide ballot measures, a record number that includes nearly 40 initiatives related to elections themselves, according to Helen Brewer of the National Conference of State Legislatures.
Direct Democracy on Key Policies
The measures give voters direct say on policies such as abortion rights, transgender rights, taxation, and the rules governing voting and direct democracy. Some proposals were placed on the ballot by lawmakers, while others originated from citizen initiatives.
Measures Targeting the Initiative Process
A subset of proposals seeks to regulate the ballot measure process itself, including raising the vote threshold for passage and adding safeguards to prevent legislatures from altering voter-approved policies.
Alabama Amendments Highlight Range
In Alabama, four constitutional amendments illustrate the breadth of topics: one requires an election to fill a lieutenant governor vacancy, another establishes a process for merging county school systems, a third mandates daily recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance and allows student-led prayer, and a fourth requires weekly performance of the national anthem's first stanza in public schools.
