Snack brands are turning flavor reveals into a guessing game, rolling out mystery varieties that challenge consumers to identify secret ingredients before Halloween unveilings. Companies including Chips Ahoy!, Hi-Chew, and J.M. Smucker are using cash prizes and social media campaigns to drive engagement around limited-edition products.
Brands Launch Guessing Games with Cash Prizes
Chips Ahoy!, owned by Mondelēz International, launched its first mystery cookie nationwide in August, offering a $25,000 prize for correctly guessing the flavor. The cookies feature caution-tape packaging and the secret will be revealed on Halloween. J.M. Smucker previously introduced a mystery Twinkie at Walmart in 2024 and plans to revive the concept in 2027.
Social Media Drives Engagement
Marketing executives say the guessing element adds an interactive layer that encourages sharing online. Mondelēz's Mili Laddha noted that social media influences snack choices for 30 percent of U.S. adults aged 18 to 44, making shareable products a key strategy for reaching new customers. Ali Brown of J.M. Smucker said the mystery format gives consumers a fun way to interact with familiar brands.
Seasonal Releases Create Urgency
Hi-Chew, following a successful 2025 Halloween mystery flavor, released an Easter 2026 mystery mix and plans another Halloween edition this fall. Morinaga America's Joanne Hsu said limited-time offerings create anticipation and a fear of missing out, driving consumers to try products before they disappear. The 2025 Hi-Chew mystery flavor drew what Hsu called a "phenomenal" response, prompting its return.
