Netflix's upcoming adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice will feature the novel's famous opening line spoken by Mrs Bennet, marking the first time the sentence has been uttered on screen in any adaptation.
Iconic line given to Mrs Bennet
The line, "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife," is delivered by family matriarch Mrs Bennet, played by Oscar-winning actor Olivia Colman. In the original 1813 novel the words come from the narrator.
Creator explains decision
Show creator Dolly Alderton said the choice made sense because Mrs Bennet is consumed with the marital status of her daughters. "It's the central drama of her story," Alderton explained, adding that she initially hesitated to adapt the classic but now views it as an honor and privilege.
Cast includes Corrin, Lowden, Demetriou
The series stars Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet and Jack Lowden as Mr Darcy, with Jamie Demetriou portraying the pompous Mr Collins. Lowden's casting arrives amid speculation linking him to the next James Bond.
December release on Netflix
This is the first major screen adaptation since Joe Wright's 2005 film. Pride and Prejudice will debut on Netflix on 3 December.
