A “famous” man seeking an injunction to prevent two media organisations from publishing allegations against him could learn the court’s decision as early as next week. The unnamed individual is taking legal action against Independent Television News (ITN) and Guardian News and Media (GNM) at the High Court in London.
Allegations of Abuse of Power
During a two-day trial, lawyers for ITN and GNM said the allegations involve the man’s alleged “abuse of power and status” to contact young women and attempt to engage in “inappropriate and exploitative sexual activities.” The man denies the claims.
Suicide Risk Argument
The claimant’s barrister, Sara Mansoori KC, argued that publication would have a “potentially fatal impact” because the man has attempted suicide twice, been hospitalised for months, and examined by more than ten doctors. She said he has no intention of returning to public life.
Public Interest Defence
Gavin Millar KC, representing the media organisations, said there is no legal precedent requiring courts to prevent a risk of death in such publication cases. He argued the allegations, gathered after a “wide-ranging and rigorous investigation” involving more than 100 people, are in the strong public interest.
Judgment Reserved
Mr Justice Nicklin said he hoped to deliver a judgment next week, noting the urgency. Reporting restrictions remain in place until the decision.
