Imran Khan's son Sulaiman Khan has warned that his father's life is in danger, stating that no one has heard from the former Pakistani prime minister since August when he claimed he was being tortured in prison.
Family Alleges Ignored Court Order
Sulaiman Khan, from Khan's first marriage to Jemima Goldsmith, accused Pakistan's army chief General Asim Munir of ignoring a Supreme Court order for Khan's medical treatment and family visits. The order directed that Khan be assessed at Shifa International Hospital and granted regular access to his lawyers and family.
Khan Held in Solitary Confinement
The 74-year-old former cricket captain and prime minister is held at Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail on corruption and bribery convictions he calls politically motivated. He faces more than 100 cases and has been kept in solitary confinement.
Comparison to Mohamed Morsi's Death
Sulaiman Khan said his father had warned he could suffer the same fate as former Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi, who died during a court hearing in 2019. "They are trying to kill him," he wrote, adding that the regime fears Khan's popularity.
Sisters Detained, Emergency Declared
Khan's three sisters were detained in September under the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance, with their detention extended on Monday. President Asif Ali Zardari declared a state of emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on October 11, citing Islamist militancy, which the PTI called a coup to weaken the movement for Khan's release.
Government Denies Mistreatment
The Pakistani government denies mistreatment, stating Khan is a convicted prisoner serving court-imposed sentences. Thousands have protested demanding his release and proper medical care.
