Myanmar's representative to the United Nations, Kyar Moe Tun, delivered an emotional appeal on Wednesday urging the international community to end its silence over the country's suffering under military rule. He said the world had "failed the people of Myanmar again and again" and called for solidarity.
During his speech, the ambassador held up a scarf created by revolutionary community Theatre 21 bearing names and ages of those killed in the struggle for freedom against the junta. He said reading the names of "fallen heroes and innocent civilians" broke his heart, highlighting the human cost of the ongoing crisis.
Kyar Moe Tun was appointed by the previous democratically-elected government prior to the 2021 coup. His remarks came as the military junta continues to face international condemnation but limited concrete action.
