By Sohaib Shams

A senior Pentagon official has been abruptly removed from his position on the Joint Staff and has subsequently retired, according to two sources familiar with the situation. Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia served as the Joint Staff’s Director for Strategy, Plans and Policy, a key role known as the J-5 that oversees long-term strategic planning.

Sudden Departure

The removal occurred earlier this week, though the specific reasons were not immediately disclosed. Sylvia's departure marks the latest sidelining of a high-ranking military officer. He previously commanded the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, as recently as May 2025.

Strategic Planning Role

As the J-5 director, Sylvia was responsible for developing military strategy and policy guidance for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The position is considered one of the most influential on the Joint Staff.
