Daily Telegraph columnist Allison Pearson is in negotiations to leave the newspaper as its new owner, German media group Axel Springer, implements up to 100 job cuts. Sources indicate Pearson, a columnist since 2010, is preparing to announce her departure imminently amid a broader restructuring aimed at turning the paper into an "AI-powered premium media and intelligence business."
Axel Springer Takeover Drives Restructuring
Axel Springer completed a £575 million takeover of the Telegraph in June. Chief executive Mathias Döpfner stated he wants the title to become the "leading centre-right media outlet in the English-speaking world." The company warned that as many as 100 journalists' roles are at risk as it transitions to a global, AI-focused operation. Telegraph chief executive Carolin Hulshoff Pol told staff the changes require clearer accountability, faster decision-making, and a simpler organisation.
Pearson's Controversial Columns Strained Relations
Pearson's relations with senior editorial figures had reportedly been strained over subjects she raised in her columns, particularly immigration. In September she wrote that far-right activist Tommy Robinson had "the rough-diamond charisma to pull a large, enthusiastic crowd" and praised patriotic displays. In 2024, Essex police investigated her for allegedly stirring up racial hatred over a social media post; the investigation was dropped after a review concluded the force was right to examine the allegations.
Newsroom Atmosphere Described as 'Morgue'
Staff describe the newsroom atmosphere since the cuts announcement as "a morgue." Proposed changes include folding separate departments such as health and travel into a single features department. The restructuring reflects Axel Springer's push for efficiencies and a global audience focus, particularly in foreign affairs, defence, and business.
Telegraph Declines Comment on Individual Staff
A Telegraph spokesperson declined to comment on Pearson's employment status, saying they could not discuss individual staff members. Pearson has been approached for comment.
