Socialist political commentator and Twitch streamer Hasan Piker has filed a $72.5 million defamation lawsuit against conservative commentator Scott Jennings in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. The suit alleges that Jennings falsely portrayed Piker as a "violent racist" who advocated the lynching of Black people.
Allegations of Deceptive Editing
The complaint centers on a podcast episode from August 11 in which Jennings played a 42-second video that the lawsuit describes as "cropped, shortened, and rearranged." The edited clip omitted the words "he said" and other contextual cues, making it appear that Piker stated, "Let's go back to a better time when lynchings were happening." According to the filing, Piker was actually ridiculing an extremist commentator during a Twitch broadcast in August 2024, summarizing that person's view by saying, "He said, 'We need more Klansmen, okay? Can we go back to a better time when lynchings were happening? This is what I like as a Black man.'"
Jennings also posted on X with a link to the video, writing that Piker "says the USA should resume lynchings against black people." The lawsuit asserts that Piker never said those words and that the original broadcast does not contain such a statement.
Political Context and Damages Sought
Piker, a California-based streamer with a large following on Twitch, is seeking $27.5 million in compensatory damages and $45 million in punitive damages, along with a jury trial. Jennings, a political commentator for CNN who hosts the independent Scott Jennings Show, was publicly known to be under consideration for the role of White House press secretary under Donald Trump at the time of the podcast, which the lawsuit suggests provided additional motive to attack a prominent left-wing critic. Jennings has not commented publicly on the suit.
