By Basant El-Faramawy

The Independent's editor-in-chief Geordie Greig and chief international correspondent Bel Trew have been shortlisted for the 2026 British Journalism Awards, the publication announced Wednesday.

Greig Nominated for Interview of the Year

Greig was shortlisted in the Interview of the Year category for his conversations with artist Tracey Emin, author Robert Harris, and former prime minister Sir John Major. In the Emin interview, the artist discussed her life before and after cancer treatment, including a major surgery that removed multiple organs. The Harris interview addressed Andy Burnham's political positioning, while the Major interview marked the 10th anniversary of Brexit, with the former prime minister stating that leaving the EU cost the UK £100 billion annually in trade and £40 billion in tax revenue.

Trew Recognized for Gaza Investigation

In the Foreign Affairs Journalism category, Trew was nominated alongside Ezz Al Din Abu Eisha and Nedal Hamdouna for their investigation into the killing of Independent Arabia photojournalist Mariam Abu Dagga. Abu Dagga, 33, died in an Israeli double-tap strike on Nasser Hospital in Gaza on August 25, 2025. The team reconstructed her final moments through dozens of eyewitness accounts, whistleblower testimony, and visual analysis, while also profiling her life and sacrifice as a journalist separated from her young son.

Awards Draw 695 Entries

The British Journalism Awards, now in their 15th year, received 695 entries across multiple categories this year.
