How Often to Wash and Replace Bed Sheets, Experts Say

By Islam El-Sakka

Laundry experts recommend washing bed sheets weekly and replacing them every two to five years, with adjustments for pet owners and allergy sufferers.

Washing Frequency Guidelines

Salvador Villarreal, owner of VIP Cleaners & Laundry, advises washing fitted and flat sheets weekly, pillowcases every three to seven days, duvet covers every two to four weeks, and comforters or duvet inserts at least every three weeks.

Special Considerations for Pets and Allergies

For households with pets that sleep in the bed or people prone to allergies, Villarreal suggests washing sheets twice a week and cleaning duvet covers and inserts every two weeks. Mattress protectors can be washed every one to two months.

Replacement Timeline

Kim Romine, a fabric care scientist at Procter & Gamble, notes that fitted sheets wear out fastest due to friction and should be replaced most often. Signs that sheets need replacement include stubborn stains, thinning fabric, pilling, tears, and loss of elasticity. Duvet covers generally last longer because they protect the comforter underneath.

Best Washing Practices

Experts recommend washing sheets in warm water between 90 and 105 degrees Fahrenheit, avoiding overloading the machine, using moderate detergent to prevent residue, and tumble drying on medium heat. Sheets should be washed separately from towels to ensure thorough cleaning and rinsing.

Additional Care Tips

Romine advises watching for fraying edges and seams as indicators to replace rather than wash. Heavy sweaters and pet owners should increase washing frequency to every few days. Cooling sheet sets may help reduce sweat buildup for hot sleepers.
